While I try to eat a balanced diet most days, I’m not perfect, and sometimes it’s just difficult to get in all the nutrients our bodies need. This is where my supplements come in, and help to fill in some of the gaps in my diet. I have been consistently taking supplements for years, but I completely overhauled my approach around the age of 35. During an annual wellness check with my physician, we took a look at some lab work and determined a few things I could start to implement into my routine at the time, as well as some supplements to add for my overall health to be preventative as an aging woman.

I grew up taking vitamins-hello Flintstones-so even as a young adult, I always knew a multivitamin was good for me. I definitely wasn’t as health conscious, but that was a necessity in my routine, and had always been a part of it. When I started focusing a little more on diet, exercise, and my overall wellness as a woman in midlife, I heard about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in our diet, and after a little research I began taking a flaxseed oil supplement daily. These two supplements were what I stayed with until the age of 35, when my doctor suggested a few additional ones.

During a review of my lab work, my doctor informed me I was deficient in vitamin D. It sounds like it’s common issue, plus I live in Indiana and there is not a lot of sun six months out of the year, so a vitamin D3 supplement was recommended. He also advised I start a magnesium supplement as well. Both the magnesium and D3 were recommended for bone health, which is important as we age. As I moved along in midlife, I added a vitamin C supplement for my immune system, and Biotin along with a Phytoceramide for skin and hair health. When I was feeling a bit low on energy, my doctor also recommended a B vitamin to assist with that issue.

These eight supplements have been a part of my daily routine for years now. While it is always best to get your vitamins and minerals through whole foods in your diet, sometimes we need a little assistance. As an woman in midlife, I focus on both my nutrition and using supplements in my diet as well. I’ll tell you about how I get these same supplements in through my diet a little later, but for now, talk with your doctor and see what your body needs. It is my intention to speak with my physician after running some new lab work this year to see what changes and additions I should make to my supplement routine, especially now that I am dealing with perimenopause.
The earlier we can start and be preventative is in our best interest. Aging is a blessing, and how we age is up to us. Do your recommended check-ups ladies, and find out what your body needs to help it function at its best through midlife and beyond. What supplements are you currently using?
