Navigating Perimenopause: Key Focus Areas for the New Year

I have never been one for making resolutions at the start of the New Year. While I see it as a fresh start, and I think I am goal-oriented, I do not beat myself up or give up everything based on a resolution I made. I understand people do what works for them, but I sometimes think that kind of pressure is what throws people off. On January 1st we are feeling good, and by the 30th when life throws a curveball, it's all over. Well, let's shift that mindset just a bit.

Perimenopause is a new stage of life and somedays it's rough. I mean “I don't know how I made it” rough. I have come to realize this phase is really requiring a bit of finessing of the mind to push a little right now. It requires time, effort, and support. I have decided to pick a few key areas to focus on intentionally, and see where the road leads next year, and I’d love it if you would join me.

Staying active and consistent in my strength training is a priority for me. Now, I am not saying it is going to be easy. Last year, particularly in the winter, I was completely unmotivated. To be honest, I think I might have dealt with a little depression, and I just didn’t realize it. Whatever it was, it caused my strength training to suffer. I know this is vital for me as I age and go through this process, so the goal is to be aware, while also being flexible because things can change .

Speaking of depression, another key area of focus for navigating perimenopause in the new year is my mental health. Trying to figure my way through a stage where I have had no teachers or mentors is a lot. Managing my current symptoms like irregular sleep and weight gain are challenging, then add my regular duties on top of that, and things can become stressful quickly. Taking time to stop and reset if necessary or taking time to get away and do nothing may be required some days. My goal is to pay better attention to how I feel, and honor those feelings to be as healthy as possible mentally.

Overall, I think it is about balance. Balance in my diet, balance in my physical health, and balance with my lifestyle in general. The changes perimenopause brings about in the body can weigh you down. Trying not to stress and focus on these changes too much helps a little. While I try to be diligent with my diet, I also enjoy a good treat. I'm an active woman who prioritizes moving my body, but some days I need AND like to do nothing. Maintaining a consistent healthy lifestyle is important, but remember to balance it with some fun along with rest and relaxation.

A new year is a good time for a reset, but when dealing with perimenopause be kind to yourself. Set some goals, and see what works and what does not. In everything you go after, remember to maintain balance and take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. What are your key areas of focus for 2025?
