There’s no question about my affinity for a bed and breakfast. Having the opportunity to stay at unique styles of B&Bs is always such a memorable experience. I’ve stayed in luxurious inns, shabby chic retreats, and historic mansions. While visiting South Carolina, I was able to stay at the beautiful Wentworth Mansion in Charleston SC, a 24,000-square-foot historic mansion built in 1886, and it did not disappoint.

From the moment we pulled up, the mansion looked incredibly grand, even though it sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood. A concierge greeted us upon arrival and kindly took our bags to our room, which was located a few floors up. There is an elevator available, but most of the time I chose to walk the stairs so I could admire the mansion’s architecture and get a little exercise along the way.

Cozy living room with a fireplace, armchairs, and an ottoman. Warm lighting, chandelier, wood armoire, and elegant decor create a relaxing mood.

Our concierge showed us to our Mansion Room, which perfectly blended modern amenities with historic charm. The tall windows and vintage furniture added so much character to the space. The bathroom was updated enough for me to still feel comfortable, despite staying in such a historic home. Each evening, there was turndown service, which felt like such a special touch after a long day of exploring Charleston.

Breakfast was served at the on-site restaurant, just a short walk across the backyard. We enjoyed Southern favorites like shrimp and grits, biscuits, and gravy, and every meal was delicious. I also wanted to try the restaurant for dinner since it is open to the public, but unfortunately, it was closed during the week we visited. That was a little disappointing, but thankfully it did not affect the amazing breakfasts we enjoyed each morning.

We also explored several local restaurants that were recommended to us. While I tried a few great spots, my favorite dining experience was at Acme Lowcountry Kitchen on the Isle of Palms near the beach. It was a random choice that turned out to be absolutely worth it.

In addition to dining, I visited the Old Slave Mart Museum and the International African American Museum. Both experiences were beautiful, emotional, and educational at the same time. I would highly recommend visiting them while in Charleston.

Overall, Charleston is such a lovely destination, and I cannot wait to visit again. The Wentworth Mansion Charleston SC would absolutely be on my list of places to stay again. Especially if Brian is still there. He was an absolute delight, and while he may not have been the innkeeper, he was hands-down one of my favorite hosts. He made the stay feel truly extraordinary and personal. If you happen to see him, tell him I said hello.
