Romantic Bed and Breakfast in Allegan, Michigan: Castle in the Country Review

Tucked away in the small town of Allegan, Michigan, Castle in the Country is a truly special escape. If you’re searching for a romantic bed and breakfast in Allegan Michigan, this charming Victorian-style inn offers the perfect setting for an anniversary trip or couples getaway. About a 2½-hour drive from my city, it felt like the ideal distance to relax and reconnect for a few days.
You’ll be captivated by the big blue main house upon arrival, which is where you check in for your stay. This Victorian-style mansion sits on 65 acres and is an absolute vision as you approach it. While there are guest rooms inside the main house, I chose to stay in the Castle Keep, a separate building located just behind the main inn.

The Sir Lancelot Suite was the room I selected for this trip. I was immediately drawn to the dual-sided fireplace, the jetted tub, and the cozy bathroom with a walk-in tile shower. The suite lived up to the pictures I saw online when I did my research. While the bathroom wasn’t overly large, it was thoughtfully designed and very well maintained. The suite also included a coffee bar and a charming dining nook where we could enjoy our daily breakfast privately if we chose to.

During our stay, we dined one morning in the spacious main-floor dining room and another morning in our suite. I appreciated having the option of in-room dining, especially since Castle Keep is separate from the main building. It added to the privacy and intimacy you hope for when booking a romantic escape.

The grounds were lovely and beautifully manicured. Bicycles were available for guests, and there was an outdoor seating area with scenic views of the property. Unfortunately, the weather during our visit was cooler and rainy, so we didn’t get to enjoy the outdoors as much as I would have liked.

One important thing to note is that this bed-and-breakfast truly feels like a countryside retreat. There isn’t much immediately nearby, so we drove out each day to dine and explore neighboring towns. There is a restaurant a short distance away, though we did not try it. Holland, Michigan, is about a 40-minute drive and is a lovely town to stroll through. We enjoyed a wonderful fine dining experience at Butch’s Dry Dock while visiting Holland, and we also hung out in South Haven to do some exploring, shopping, and dining.

Overall, Castle in the Country is a place I would specifically recommend as a romantic bed and breakfast in Allegan Michigan for couples looking to reconnect and unwind. While friends could certainly stay here and enjoy the experience, I do think it feels especially suited for those celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or special occasion.
I had the opportunity to view multiple rooms in both buildings. In my opinion, the suites in Castle Keep are slightly larger and offer a bit more privacy, though the rooms in the main Castle are equally charming and welcoming. I paid approximately $350 per night for the Sir Lancelot Suite, and for me, it was well worth it for what is considered a four-star property. I truly enjoyed my stay and hope to return again.
