If you don't know by now, I love a good bed and breakfast. Whenever I travel, it’s the first type of accommodation I look for, followed by a boutique hotel, and then a chain hotel. I enjoy the comfort of an intimate space that feels relaxing and a bit more charming than a standard hotel. Recently, I enjoyed a getaway with my sister at a lovely Bed and Breakfast near Grand Rapids, Michigan. The vibe was cozy and inviting which was exactly what we needed to unwind and spend some quality time together.

Prairieside Suites is perfect if you’re searching for one of the best places to stay in Michigan. It’s located on a quiet street in Grandville, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids and just a short distance from the heart of the city. The innkeeper sent me a code to unlock the door when we arrived, which I thought was incredibly convenient. Sometimes an innkeeper greets you in person, and while I enjoy that option, the self check in was easy and stress free. Inside, a welcome center provided helpful information about our room location, breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi.

I stayed in the Spanish Hacienda room, and I was immediately comfortable. The 400-square-foot space was filled with amenities like a fireplace, jacuzzi tub, heated floors, and heated towel racks. They even labeled remotes and outlets so I didn’t have to guess how anything worked which was such a thoughtful detail. The room also had a microwave, mini-fridge, and coffee bar stocked with plates, silverware, and more. I truly felt like they thought of everything. The decor was stunning, and I especially appreciated having an individually controlled thermostat. Once I saw all of this, I knew I was set.

We took a little time to settle into our rooms before exploring the rest of the bed and breakfast. There were cake and cookies available for snacking, board games to play, and a cozy gathering area if we wanted to hang out. We met the host, Janine, and had such a great conversation with her. She was warm and easy to talk to. It felt like chatting with a friend. I would’ve loved to talk to her even longer, and maybe even interview her for this post.

I was impressed by the reasonable rate for such a nice space. At around $260 a night, it offered more amenities than some other places I’ve stayed that were priced about $150 more. Prices vary by room, but I’d recommend starting with the Spanish Hacienda which is a nice introduction to the property.
Room Tip: If you prefer quiet and more privacy, opt for the rooms on the lower level. But if you are challenged with stairs, these will not be the best for you. The Southern Mansion is the grandest
room, but it is not the quietest because of its proximity to the kitchen on the main floor and the street it is facing. You're going to hear a lot. The Tuscan Villa is an outer room on the first floor, that has its own entrance, and the street it is facing is quiet.
If you're looking for a romantic getaway, self-care retreat, or even a sister trip, consider Prairieside Suites. It’s an ideal spot for a Michigan weekend getaway, whether you’re traveling with a partner or a friend I’d highly recommend staying for at least two nights, and tell Janine I said hello.
