DIY Magnesium Butter Recipe For Better Sleep and Healthy Skin

I started taking magnesium more than 15 years ago after my doctor recommended adding it to my daily routine to support my aging body. At the time, I only knew magnesium as a supplement that supported bone health. It wasn't until I entered perimenopause that I discovered just how many other benefits it could offer.
Because insomnia became one of my perimenopause struggles, I started taking magnesium glycinate before bed. I appreciated how it helped me relax and ease into sleep each night. Not long afterward, I discovered magnesium butter and learned that applying magnesium topically may be a more effective way to increase magnesium levels.
Of course, I wanted to give it a try. While researching where to buy it, I was surprised to find that making it at home was actually quite simple. If you know me, you know I couldn't resist making my own! This DIY magnesium butter recipe is easy to prepare, and it makes just over 32 ounces, so it lasts quite a while. Feel free to adjust the recipe if you'd like to make a smaller amount.
For me, using both magnesium butter and magnesium glycinate has become part of my evening routine and has helped me enjoy a little more restful sleep.
DIY Magnesium Butter Recipe
Recipe adapted from Outdoor Apothecary.
Ingredients:
½ cup magnesium chloride flakes
½ cup distilled water
8 ounces shea butter
8 ounces coconut oil
6 tablespoons jojoba oil
⅓ cup prepared magnesium oil
Essential oil of your choice (I use lavender)
Instructions:
Prepare the magnesium oil by boiling ½ cup of distilled water. Pour the hot water over ½ cup of magnesium chloride flakes and stir until completely dissolved. Allow it to cool.
Place the shea butter and coconut oil in a heat-safe bowl set over a pot of gently simmering water (double boiler method). Melt the ingredients slowly, keeping the temperature below 110°F. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
Stir in the jojoba oil until well combined.
Using a hand mixer on low speed, slowly add the prepared magnesium oil while mixing. Continue blending until the mixture is smooth and no longer separates.
Place the mixture in the refrigerator until it becomes opaque but is not completely solid.
Remove the bowl from the refrigerator and whip the mixture until it becomes light and fluffy. Add your favorite essential oil and continue whipping until you reach your desired consistency.
Transfer your finished DIY magnesium butter recipe to clean glass jars or airtight containers. Store in a cool, dry place.

Final Thoughts
Making your own magnesium butter is surprisingly simple, and it's a fun way to customize your self-care routine with your favorite essential oils. Whether you're looking to support relaxation, soothe dry skin, or complement your nightly wellness routine, this homemade magnesium butter is worth trying.
Note: While many people enjoy topical magnesium products, research on how much magnesium is absorbed through the skin is still limited. If you have sensitive skin, certain medical conditions, or concerns about your magnesium intake, talk with your healthcare provider before adding topical magnesium products to your routine.
