It comes as no surprise that I enjoy a healthy smoothie most days of the week. Over the past several months, I've changed when I drink my smoothie, choosing to start my mornings with warm foods and drinks instead. Once I've gone through that routine, I move on to making my smoothie.

Drinking a healthy smoothie has been part of my morning routine for several years now. Over time, the ingredients have evolved as I've learned more about nutrition and what’s right for my body. Today, I want to share what I believe helps make a smoothie more nourishing for you instead of turning into a sugar bomb.

I drink my smoothie as a meal replacement because it's packed with protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. My smoothie averages around 600 calories, which keeps me satisfied for hours before I need another snack or meal.

One of the biggest challenges when making a smoothie is avoiding a lot of added sugar. That's why I recommend starting with your vegetables first. Greens tend to scare people off, but if you begin with a mild option like spinach, you'll hardly notice it's there. As your taste buds adjust, you can experiment with heartier greens like kale. The best part of adding vegetables is it’s one of the easiest ways to get a serving of veggies early in the day.

Next, choose your liquid base. Try to avoid fruit juice, as it often contains a lot of added or naturally concentrated sugar. Instead, opt for unsweetened nut milk, coconut water, or plain water. I personally use water as my base and let the natural sweetness come from my fruit.

To make a truly well rounded and healthy smoothie, don't forget the protein. Protein helps keep you full longer and supports muscle health. Great options include Greek yogurt, protein powder, or seeds. I'm not a protein powder girl, so I choose to use Greek yogurt along with an unflavored collagen supplement to bring my smoothie to about 50 grams of protein.

Healthy fats are another essential component. Seeds like hemp hearts and chia seeds provide omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and even a little extra protein. The best part is that they don't change the flavor, making them an easy addition to almost any smoothie recipe.

Carbohydrates naturally come from many of your smoothie ingredients, especially fruit. I usually reach for a blend of berries because they're generally lower in sugar than many tropical fruit, and I love the antioxidants they provide. That said, I do enjoy tropical fruit, but I just save it for an occasional change of pace.

Over the years, I've also experimented with ingredients that add even more nutritional value without changing the taste or texture too much. My favorites include micro-greens, sea moss, and sprouts. These simple additions help boost the vitamin and mineral content of my smoothie without requiring much extra effort.

Once everything is in the blender, blend until smooth and enjoy! It may take a little trial and error to discover your favorite flavor combinations, but keeping these basic building blocks in mind will help you create a balanced, nutrient-dense smoothie that fuels your body with vitamins, minerals, protein, healthy fats, fiber, and carbohydrates.

Before you know it, you'll be making healthy smoothies like a pro, and your body will thank you for it. What's your favorite smoothie combination? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
