I've always paid close attention to what I pack when I travel. Years ago, I was packing for my three daughters and myself, so every detail mattered. Fast-forward 20 years, and while I'm only packing for myself these days, the details are still just as important.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, or maybe it's because perimenopause has entered the picture, but now I pack with two priorities in mind: comfort and safety. My perimenopause travel essentials have become just as important as my clothes and toiletries because they help me enjoy my trips instead of worrying about how I'll sleep or whether I'll feel comfortable.

Nature Made magnesium bottle, two green earplugs, and a black MZOO sleep mask on a countertop.

Right now, comfort starts with protecting my sleep. As anyone dealing with perimenopause knows, quality sleep can already be a challenge, so I don't want to make it any harder while traveling. A good pair of earplugs is always in my suitcase because not every hotel is as quiet as I'd like. I sleep best in complete silence, and earplugs help create the peaceful environment I need.

Darkness is just as important, so I never leave home without my eye mask. I can adjust it for a comfortable fit, and it keeps early morning sunlight from waking me before I'm ready. Another item that has earned a permanent place in my travel bag is magnesium glycinate. It's a newer addition to my routine this year, but it has been helpful in relaxing my body as I continue working through my perimenopause-related insomnia.

Comfort isn't the only thing I think about anymore. These days, safety has become just as important.

I'll admit that getting older has made me more aware of potential risks while traveling, but I like to think of it as wisdom rather than anxiety. After hearing several heartbreaking news stories about carbon monoxide deaths in hotels and Airbnb rentals, both in the United States and abroad, I decided to add a standard-sized carbon monoxide detector to my packing list for every trip.

I also travel with a portable door lock and a doorstop alarm. While most hotels have secure locks, not all of them provide the extra peace of mind I want when I'm sleeping alone or staying somewhere unfamiliar. The doorstop alarm easily slides under the door and sounds loudly if someone tries to enter. Together, these small items give me an added layer of security. Both my carbon monoxide detector and doorstop alarm require batteries, and I've even traveled internationally with them without any issues. In fact, I pack these same safety items for my daughters whenever they travel. It gives me a little extra peace of mind knowing they have an added layer of protection wherever they go.

Of course, no travel product is perfect. I did have one trip where I wasn't able to use either the portable door lock or the doorstop alarm because of the way the hotel door was designed. It was the first time that had happened, and I'll admit it made me feel a little less comfortable. Thankfully, everything turned out fine, but it reminded me that these products are helpful tools and not guarantees.

For me, traveling doesn't have to mean sacrificing comfort or peace of mind. By packing a few thoughtful perimenopause travel essentials, I can sleep better, feel safer, and enjoy the experience a little more. Whether it's earplugs, an eye mask, magnesium glycinate, or a few simple safety devices, these small additions have made a big difference in how I travel.

As I've gotten older, I've learned that packing isn't just about what I'll wear. It's about bringing the things that help me feel rested, secure, and ready to enjoy every adventure. And honestly, that's all this midlife girl can ask for.
