I grew up in the Pentecostal church. The rules were strict, especially when it came to the dress code. There were lots of denim skirts and dresses everywhere. I still have such vivid memories of the ankle length skirts that didn't really come off as stylish or trendy. So, when I saw they were front and center again, I wondered how well this trend would translate. I've seen some really cute ones that were definitely not like any denim skirt my grandmother would have worn back in the day, but I have seen some that look very familiar to those skirts I saw being worn 30 years ago. I found a few pieces that are nice, modernized versions of the denim dress and skirt, and leave me feeling comfortable wearing them as a woman in her 40s.
When I first saw this denim dress online, I was torn. Something about it grabbed my attention, but there was also something about the photo that didn't do it any justice. Once I put it on, I was excited about the direction it was going in. It's actually called a denim shirt dress. It has buttons all the way down the front and a belt. I like these features because the fit and flare style is flattering. My only opposition is the length. It hits above my knees, so if you're tall like me I would highly recommend shorts underneath. My shoe preference would be heels, but you can go casual with sneakers as well. This is going to be nice for the spring, and it's a good way to add some stylish denim to your closet.
I love denim skirts, but I haven't found a long length option that quite works for me. So, my next best option was this high rise denim skirt I grabbed at JCPenney. This skirt is on the shorter side; however, it has a good fit to it that's comfortable and “safe” for tall women. It doesn't flare out in the back, which some shorter skirts can do, and it has a reasonable amount of stretch so you can move around easily. This piece will take you through the spring with a simple sweatshirt and sneakers, and you’ll stay cute and cool in the summer with a tank and sandals.
Denim dresses have come a long way. When I saw this one at Old Navy, I thought it was a nice, updated version of the classic. The puff sleeve is feminine, the cut-out detail is just as cute as can be without being too much, and the length is great. Now my grandmother likely wouldn't approve of this mainly because of the cut-out (it’s a church dress code thing), but I think it is a pretty piece that I can wear plenty of places this season. These cute gladiator sandals are the perfect simple shoe needed for such a dress.
Overall, there are a variety of options to choose from that suit your personal style. Whether you prefer something longer like a dress, or simple like a denim skirt, you should have no problem finding something that works. Each of these pieces works for me in their own way, and give me some variation in style. I'm curious which style you would try?
