5 Walking Must-Haves for a More Comfortable and Consistent Walking Routine

Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise, but I still like to prepare before heading out the door. In general, I lay out my workout clothes the night before. It makes my morning routine much smoother, and if you've been around here for a while, you know we're all about keeping things simple.
Along with that routine, I have a few walking must-haves that make every walk more enjoyable and a little easier. You may already own some of these, but there are a few you might want to consider.
1. A Good Pair of Walking Shoes
Let's start with the obvious: walking shoes.
I can't tell you how much of a difference they made in the support and comfort of my feet once I finally invested in a pair. Walking shoes are designed to handle the repetitive impact of walking on pavement, and I noticed the difference immediately compared to my cross-trainers.
Now, I know they can be a little pricey, so if you're just getting started, use what you already have. But if you decide walking is something you want to do consistently, I highly recommend investing in a quality pair of walking shoes. There are plenty of great options available, so take your time and find the pair that works best for you.
2. Sunscreen
Whether the sun is shining or hiding behind the clouds, I never skip sunscreen.
I apply it to my face before every walk and always use a lip balm with SPF. Cooler weather can make us forget about sun protection, but UV rays are still there. Since my face is exposed year-round, I make sure to use a sunscreen that lasts throughout my walk.
Thankfully, there are plenty of affordable options available now. I finally found one that blends in well without leaving that white cast on my skin. Last year's sunscreen search was quite the adventure—but that's a story for another day!
3. Earbuds for Music, Podcasts, or Audiobooks
Every good walk deserves a little entertainment.
A simple pair of earbuds can make your walk fly by. Create an upbeat playlist (80s and 90s music gets my vote 😁), catch up on your favorite podcast, or listen to an audiobook.
I'm a huge true crime fan, although I'm very picky about the storyteller. Last year, I also discovered celebrity memoirs on audiobook, and they completely changed my walking routine. Normally I prefer holding an actual book in my hands, but listening while I walk has been such a great experience.
If you'd like my list of favorite celebrity memoirs, let me know!
4. A Pedometer or Step Tracking App
If you enjoy tracking your progress, a pedometer or step-counting app is another one of my favorite walking must-haves.
I actually use both. My pedometer was a $10 Amazon find that does exactly what I need it to do. I also use the tracking app on my phone while I'm walking.
The reason I wear a pedometer is because I'm not attached to my phone once I'm back home. Keeping the pedometer on throughout the day gives me a better estimate of my total daily steps. Neither method is perfect, but together they give me a good picture of how active I've been.

5. A Walking Buddy (Optional but Highly Recommended)
The first four items are things I use every day, but there's one more that I consider optional—although I highly recommend it if possible.
A walking buddy or accountability partner.
I know that isn't available for everyone, and it certainly shouldn't stop you from getting outside and walking. But having someone to encourage you makes a huge difference.
Since I hosted my first walking challenge, so many women have joined because they wanted the support and encouragement of a community. There's something special about being surrounded by like-minded people who share similar goals. On the days when your motivation is low, your community can help keep you moving.
I truly believe building this community will be one of the best parts of our next challenge of walking two miles a day.
Final Thoughts on These Walking Must-Haves
I hope this list of walking must-haves gives you a few ideas for making your walks more comfortable and enjoyable.
Remember, you don't need to buy everything at once. Start with what you have, keep things simple, and build your routine over time.
I'd love for you to join me on our upcoming walks. We're not just walking—we're building healthier habits, growing stronger, and encouraging one another along the way.
So tell me, what are you challenging yourself to do this season?
